Well… I don’t think that was supposed to happen.

The weekend is here! We just tapped a special preview keg of Choco Thickfreakness with Carrboro Coffee Roasters coffee. It’s gonna go quick. The only other one in existence is gonna get tapped at the Sour Barn Bash. Tomorrow at 4pm we tap a one of a kind keg of Choco Thickfreakness with toasted hazelnuts, sea salt and maple syrup. This was inspired by the winner of last springs bake off!

Tonight at 7pm at The ArtsCenter! We are helping organize a community conversation on homelessness, poverty and hunger in our community. We encourage everyone to join in the discussion. Please share your experiences, concerns and ideas so we can move forward as a community. There will be a short discussion led by a panel of experts working with homeless populations followed by group discussions. This is only the first step in a larger process.
Need beverages? @steelstringbrewery and open eye open @carrborocoffee

Our new tanks arrived today, a bit ahead of schedule. They are going to live in our taproom for now, hopefully in their final locations by the weekend. It’s been very exciting getting them off the truck and in doors. Thanks to Fitch Lumber Company for the assist, with out them we would have been in trouble. More Carrboro beer coming real soon.
Hey, doesn’t pork cotton candy sound ridiculous and awesome? Well, it’s being served tomorrow at The Eddy Pub for our beer dinner, and I’m extremely excited about it. Call them (336.525.2010) today and make a reservation! We can chat about beer, how to make and/or drink it. It’ll be lots of fun.
We decided to combine two of Carrboro’s favorite things – yoga and beer. Join us Sunday morning for a relaxing practice to get your day started right. The class is $10 and includes a pint of beer when we open at noon. Space is limited, reserve your spot by going to -http://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e0b4da5ae2aa5fc1-sunday
Bring your own mat. Calm your body and mind before the Panthers play for the NFC championship.
We have a new official Instagram account! Please follow @steelstringbrewery for frequent updates on everything from what’s currently on tap, beer’s in the works, bottle releases, events in and out of the taproom, our impending growth, plus all the random silliness you can best bet we’re getting in to.
Our brewmaster extraordinaire Will is still reppin’ the Steel String on his personal account @steelstringbrew, follow him for the inner workings of our brewery, great photos and insight into the process’s and ingredients we use to craft our brews, as well as photos of his cute dogs, Bruin and Chewy.
Come grab a just released Choco Thickfreakness Imperial Stout aged in Heaven Hill bourbon barrels and enjoy this beautiful weather while its here. The patio is calling.
Over the coming weeks and months you will notice some changes happening in our brewery and taproom. Things might get messy and cramped at stages, so please excuse our mess as we get everything ready to make a lot more beer. Today the glass encasing our brewery came down, exposing it to the taproom. We kindly ask that folks refrain from touching the system. It could result in a nasty burn, shock or cause costly damage. These are exciting developments that will lead to a better steel string experience for everyone, so again please bare with us. If you get curious about what’s happening, feel free to ask your friendly steel string bartender or brewer.
Volunteer at the Steel String event of the season benefitting Benevolence Farm on February 6th! We rely on the generous support of our community and Steel String is no exception. Proceeds from their Sour Barn Bash, featuring the works of snap pea catering, Crude Bitters & Sodas, Boro Beverage, and other craftspeople in the area will benefit Benevolence Farm and our mission to provide women leaving prison with the opportunity to live and work on a farm where they grow food, nourish self, and foster community. Sign up to volunteer here or check out the event’s fb page https://www.facebook.com/events/968617006517321/ or sourbash.com.
Oh yea! We’re doing the Choco Thickfreakness bake-off again. If you didn’t participate last time either as a taster or baker, heres your chance to relive all the delicious and decadent glory. We’re calling all amateur dessert chefs to make your best pairing to our bourbon barrel aged, chocolate infused monster of a stout. There will be fabulous prizes for the winners, anyone who attends can vote for their favorite. We’ll have Choco Thickfreakness on tap, along with a few surprise additions. This event is free to attend.
This might not be as exciting as a post about beer but it is definitely more important. Carrboro and Chapel Hill have for too long had serious issues with poverty, hunger and homelessness. We reside in one of the wealthiest county’s in the region, in the wealthiest nation the world has ever seen. We find the fact that so many of our neighbors are struggling each day with basic necessities to be a great disgrace which wounds our very souls, and an affront to our stated values.
We find ourselves now in a rare moment when these issues are on the forefront of our community’s consciousness and we must use it to make serious progress in alleviating these issues. For the last few months groups of specific interests have been meeting about these issues, and many people felt it was time to have a more inclusive discussion. Steel String offers it’s space as a place to start this community wide discussion.
We invite anyone who wishes to provide their experience, knowledge, ideas, concerns or simple desire to learn more about these critical issues to attend the first conversation on Wednesday January 27th @7pm. This will only be a starting point for greater community engagement.
